"The VBAC Doula" for the Charlotte Area
Hi, my name is Angela Hathaway. I am a CAPPA Trained Childbirth Labor Doula and AVIVA Certified Childbirth
Educator. I have three beautiful and amazing children—Miranda (born in 2003), Emily (born in 2006), and Daniel
(born in 2008). All three of my children were born via cesarean. One might think that this would put me at a
disadvantage to assisting a woman in labor...but it is because of my cesarean experiences (each of them vastly
different) that I am keenly aware of the special needs of the VBAC-hopeful mother and her partner. My birth
experiences have also brought me to a place of great compassion and understanding for those who encounter challenges
during their pregnancy or birth. Today, I am grateful for the births I have had because they helped me discover a
sincere passion for VBAC, natural birth and empowering birthing couples through evidence-based education.
I am a huge advocate for VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). I believe that women who have had a previous cesarean
should not have to ask for permission to use their vagina to birth their subsequent babies. I have done extensive
research on the safety and risks of VBAC and truly believe VBAC to be far safer for both mother and baby than a repeat
cesarean.
I believe that all women deserve the feeling of empowerment, pride, and joy that comes with childbirth. I believe in
helping parents learn about their choices and educating themselves on the risks versus benefits of common interventions.
Every woman, every baby, and every birth is different and unique. Therefore each family’s preferences, choices and decisions
are to be respected and honored. I believe in providing a calm, caring, and nurturing environment for a woman to labor
peacefully and confidently.
